Accreditation ensures the quality standards of a university or college and its programs.
Institutional: Canada has no national accreditation system. Institutions are given authority to grant degrees, diplomas and certificates through provincial regulations, and are therefore 'recognized'. This, coupled with membership in organizations like the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), is considered equivalent to institutional accreditation. Community colleges may also join the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC). Christian universities and community colleges may be accredited by The Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) and The Association of Theological Schools (ATS).
Professional: Professional accrediting agencies evaluate specific departments and programs to determine whether they meet the standards of the profession. Professional accreditation may be for programs, or for individual graduates of the programs.
