 Program Overview  study in america

The School of Business & Economics at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) prepares students to succeed in a global business environment that is known today for the rapid pace of change. TRU offers a widely recognized four-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree program that emphasizes sound technical and analytical skills, and a broad-based education, especially during the first two years of the degree. After completing their first two years of study, students may also access co-op education placements; TRU also offers a number of student exchange opportunities.

Prior to entering third year, students can select from seven majors: accounting; economics; finance; human resource management; international business; information technology; and marketing. Students can also complete minors in any of these disciplines, as well as a minor in public relations.

Students interested in the field of management information systems can complete double-degree option in business and computing in a five-year program plan. This option allows students to earn both their BBA degree and a Bachelor of Technology in Applied Computing Science (BTACS) degree.

New business program options from TRU include a highly flexible Bachelor of Commerce degree with eight concentrations, a Bachelor of Technology degree in Technology Management designed for graduates of two-year technology diploma programs, and a Bachelor of Business in Real Estate degree for graduates of UBC Real Estate courses. All three of these programs are designed as "open" programs that are highly flexible in transfer credit options, and allow for completion through distance and online education.

The School of Business also offers a number of one- and two-year program options, which are all connected enabling students to ladder their credits into the third year of the BBA degree. Accounting students can complete a certificate in year one, a diploma in year two and then enter the degree in third year to complete a major in accounting.

Management students can choose to complete both a certificate and diploma in their first two years before entering the degree. Office administration students can complete the Administrative Assistant Certificate, followed by the Executive Assistant Diploma in second year before entering the BBA degree program. Students who have completed two-year diplomas in accounting, business, management or office administration at other colleges or universities may also apply for admission to the BBA degree in third year. Transfer credits are evaluated on an individual basis.

Graduates of the BBA degree may articulate with many professional business associations from accounting and finance to international business and add professional designations or internationally recognized qualifications to their resumes.

The BBA degree offers highly competitive co-op education work terms, which provide students with real job experience, generally attractive salaries for students and extensive networking opportunities. There are also many valuable international exchange opportunities for business students, who can spend a full semester or more at universities in England, Finland, Holland and many other places in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

There are a variety of extracurricular students clubs, including the Business Student Club on campus. This club works actively with the School of Business and Economics to promote student events and activities.

Postgraduate studies are available to students in business and from other fields of study. Five different post-baccalaureate diplomas— Accounting, Finance, Human Resource Management, Marketing, and International Business are open to graduates of bachelor's degrees from non-business faculties, usually arts and science. Business graduates can add a post-baccalaureate diploma in Journalism or enrol in the new Master of Business Administration program.

 Admissions  study in america

While qualified Canadian applicants are admitted to the first year of the BBA degree on a first-applied, first-admitted basis (called Open Admissions), priority for registration (course selection) may be based on applicants' high school marks in their top four academic courses.

BBA applicants are required to have completed BC grade 12 with English 12 (B) and Math (B) or their equivalents. Students from other colleges or universities may transfer at any time with up to 60 credits and adult students may apply for mature student status as long as they meet the course requirements listed above.

Students are formally admitted into BBA study at the first-year level. During the first two years, they complete General Education and Lower Division requirements. General requirements include a minimum of 12 credits each in the humanities and social sciences and a minimum of six credits in the sciences and mathematics. Specific Lower Division requirements, which must be completed with at least a C grade, include courses in mathematics, computing, economics, accounting and English.

Application forms can be completed online or obtained from the TRU admissions office. Once completed, they should be returned to the office with high school and/or postsecondary transcripts. International applicants must submit a $100 application fee; Canadian applicants must submit a $25 fee with their application form.

International Admissions
TRU mails successful international applicants a pre-acceptance letter. After students have sent TRU their program selection plan and fees for the first semester of study, the university mails an official letter of acceptance. International students should then apply to the nearest Canadian Embassy for a student visa. They also should make arrangements with TRU for accommodation and airport pickup.

A student who has a TOEFL score of 570 or higher is eligible to directly enter academic programs. No additional ESL upgrading is required. See www.truworld.ca for more options.

Buildings and Facilities  study in america

The TRU campus provides students with a range of modern classrooms, computer labs, recreational and student facilities, including the Campus Activity Centre, and the new Tournament Capital Centre that includes an outdoor stadium and soccer field, and indoor Aquatic Centre with Olympic-sized pool and an indoor track. Classrooms and labs are designed for smaller classes and all students receive computer accounts with Internet access and email accessible from home.

TRU students have access to technology in many forms, including the extensive use of WebCT as an instructional tool in many classes. All student registrations and records are accessible through TRU Online, as well as the library and other service areas for students.

Numerous buildings and facilities comprise the university campus, which provide both learning spaces and student services, many of which are found on Student Street. They include a health clinic, employment centre, counselling and career centre and print services with the latest digital color and online Docutech production. TRU also supports a daycare centre, horticulture gardens and student radio station. The new International Building that opened in 2005, is home to the School of Business and Economics as well as all international business operations.

Housing options on campus include a brand new 580-bed university residence, and a smaller 300-unit residence that is privately owned. The new TRU residence offers high quality accommodation with fully furnished single, double or quad units, featuring private bedrooms with double beds and televisions. The monthly rent includes all services (satellite TV, telephone, internet, heat/air conditioning) as well as a light housekeeping service).

Support for International Students  study in america

TRU offers support services to international students to help them adjust to a new environment. The International Education Centre (TRU World) runs a Peer Program, which matches international students with Canadian peers or volunteers. TRU's International Academic Advisers provide program planning, registration and study skills counselling. The university has four advisers dedicated to working with international students. These academic advisers help students plan their program and select their courses. TRU's eight multilingual International Student Advisers provide personal counselling for international students both before their arrival in Canada and during their studies. The International Student Activities Program (ISAP) provides students with regular activities and outings in the Kamloops area.
